home security cameras installation

There is a lot of planning involved in installing security cameras yourself. You need the right equipment, the right positioning of those cameras, and the right cameras that can withstand the elements.

Doing the research is important because installing home security cameras is one thing but how do you know if they’re facing the spot you want? Checking on your phone while up a ladder is dangerous provided they work with an app. Sometimes it is best to get a professional to do it.

Here are 5 things to know before installing home security cameras.

1. Less is not more.

When buying security cameras, it’s better to have more than one. You may need three or four because the space that needs to be covered around a home can be misleading from below.

What do you want to cover? The front door? the front and back garden? the side of the house? All of the above? To really know there’s nothing unusual happening covering all around the home is the only option. However, it varies depending on which part of the country you live and what type of home you have.

2. Measure twice, and cut once.

Parents are great for old-wives-tales and proverbs such as “Measure twice, cut once”. And yes, this one is specifically related to cutting wood but I think it can be used in a broader sense.

After placing your security cameras in the area you want on your home, just make sure it’s facing in the right direction before you drill. Most cameras have a wide field of view but, always have the center of the camera lens facing your chosen focal point. At least then you can guarantee the least amount of distortion.

Getting a home security camera that works through an app is a great way to check which direction it’s facing in real-time. This saves you time and saves your home from multiple holes in its walls.

3. Wireless home security cameras v isn’t wireless

When we and other companies state that home security cameras are wireless, it’s actually in relation to Wifi functionality, they still need power. If a security camera is Wifi capable but also works with rechargeable batteries then it is completely wireless. However, the only way to recharge them is to go back up the ladder and take the battery, which is too much hassle. You may have a nice high spot to place your camera but you still need to plug it in.

4. Play around with the settings.

It’s good to know how your security cameras work. That’s the only way you utilize the full potential of the hardware. Know how long your cameras record for if you can use an app remotely, can you access video through your phone, tablet and/or desktop.

Many security cameras use cloud storage as a way to save video footage, but if you’re looking for 24/7 recording, you’re going to need an SVR. However, cheap brands don’t usually sell them with their cameras. Our SVR allows you to add 8 cameras and record 24/7 for over 30 days. And you can still access live-view and footage from your phone, remotely.
